yeah that thing is awesome, it's so insanely similar to what I had in mind, except I never was able to get my project rolling since I left for the academy at about the same time I was thinking of doing it.

The thing is, you could use them to attach to some longer straps, to provide the cinching power. And they're probably long enough to go over something like a Jerry can, which you would want securely mounted. Then again, you could probably fab some kind of can mount...
